From its inception in 1949, TNB has served to fulfill a fundamental need that has contributed immensely to the nation’s socio-economic development: that for electricity. This has meant the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, and the installation of the infrastructure required. It has involved mega projects such as the construction of the National Electricity Grid, of hydroelectric dams and power stations. More than 60 years on, the Company continues to extend the national grid to the far flung corners of the country, and invest in alternative sources of electricity, such as solar, to power communities that are too remotely located to be connected to the grid. In its ultimate quest to provide Malaysians with reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity, TNB has also in recent years invested in alternative, greener technologies such as solar and biofuel. It has set up the country’s largest solar power plant and is working with plantation companies to tap into biomass energy. As the country’s largest electricity company, TNB has taken on the role of ‘Powering the Nation’, and this forms the core of the Company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy. However, CSR at TNB extends beyond its core mission. The Company also contributes significantly to the socio-economic development of the nation by promoting education, providing aid to marginalised communities, promoting the growth of small and medium sized companies and by supporting sporting talent. TNB also offers one of the most extensive employee benefits packages in the country. These initiatives have made TNB a forerunner in the realm of CSR in Malaysia, and the Company’s policies served as a benchmark in a pilot study on CSR for the Government’s Silver Book initiative.
