Research into Renewable EnergyPrint this page
In 2008, TNB established a Centre of Renewable Energy (CRE) at UNITEN. CRE collaborates with other research institutions in Malaysia and overseas to develop and enhance applications of prevailing RE technologies. At present, it has 20 on-going projects funded by UNITEN, TNB Research, MOSTI and the Kedah State Government to the tune of about RM4 million. CRE plans to establish a UNITEN-TNB Renewable Energy centre and research station in Besut, Terengganu. To be installed with a 1MW grid-connected PV solar system, this research station will focus on marine and wave energy, wind energy, biomass and biodiesel studies. There are also plans to convert UNITEN into a ‘Green Campus’ powered by a 1MW BIPV (building integrated photovoltaic) solar system. UNITEN is also home to the Institute of Energy Policy and Research (IEPRe), established in July 2008. Chaired by prominent sustainable development expert, Dr Rajendra K Pachauri, Director General of The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) of India, and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), IEPRe is poised to make a significant contribution towards capacity building in energy and environmental issues relevant to the country’s socio-economic goals. |
