Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) emerged as the best ranked Elecitric Utilities in Asean in Platts Top 250 Company for 2009, a prestigious energy industry award that recognises the outstanding financial performance of top energy companies. The annual rankings by Platts, a leading global provider of energy and commodities information, measures companies performance in the previous year using four key metrics: asset worth, revenues, profits and return on invested capital. Among Electric Utilities in Asia, TNB took the 4th position. It is trailed by other established eletric utilities like Kansai Electric Power Co, Japan; Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc, Japan; Hong Kong Electric Holdings Ltd and KEPCO, Korea. TNB earned the 123rd spot on overall global performance (2008: 100). This placed TNB ahead of big corporations in developed countries such as Kansai Electric Power Co. of Japan (125), EGL of Switzerland (192) and Canadian Utilities (216). The national electricity corporation ranked 23 in overall performance in Asia and 31 in Electric Utilities globally. Commenting on the award, TNB president/chief executive officer Dato' Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said: "We have done fairly well considering the 2008 financial year was a tough period given the volatile global fuel prices and weaker ringgit." "Despite the tough times, we have remained focus in our strive to serve our customers better through improvement in efficiency and productivity, as well as the quality of electricity supply to our customers." The award was presented at the Platts Top 250 Global Energy Companies Award on November 16, in Singapore. TNB was represented by its General Manager of Corporate Communications, Ismail Hj Abd Rahman.
