UNITEN Receives Royal Visit at IGEM 2010Print this page

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) team received a royal surprise at the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2010 recently when His Royal Highness, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin came over to the booth to check on the university's bio diesel research project.

Mr. Kumaran Palanisamy, UNITEN's Senior Lecturer and his team members from College of Engineering grabbed the once in a life time opportunity and demonstrated the Bio-diesel products showcased at the exhibition.  UNITEN first initiated the research program to convert non-edible feedstock and waste cooking oil into biodiesel since 2002. The idea of this research is to produce complimentary fuel to existing palm biodiesel as well as fossil diesel.

In addition, this project also received considerable attention and interest from many parties including the Prime Minister himself, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, energy industry players and technopreneurs. Many expressed their interest to participate in the commercialization of this locally developed and internationally patented technology. Once commercialized, this project can be a showcase to testify that energy demand can be sustainably supported without comprising environment conservation by a technically feasible and economically viable green and zero waste solution i.e. recycle Malaysian waste cooking oil into bio diesel.

IGEM 2010 is an exhibition jointly organized by Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water with Green Purchasing Network Malaysia. It is aimed at promoting a prestigious venue where green product buyers and sellers meet and conduct transactions innovative eco-products, green technologies and services while increasing consumer awareness concerning global climate change and demand for green products. Concurrently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNITEN and Kumpulan Arena was signed to further collaborate on conducting training on natural refrigeration between the two parties.
