Meter Replacement ProgrammePrint this page

To ensure accurate meter readings, aged electricity meters should be replaced.

Why should aged electricity meters be replaced?

Electromechanical meters that are more than 15 years should be replaced to ensure accurate consumption of electricity is recorded.

This meter exercise is currently practised by utility companies around the world.

meterBenefits of meter replacement

  • Meter replacement enables TNB to conduct wiring inspections on meters to ensure that are in good and safe working order
  • TNB will replace old and worn service wires with new ones if necessary
  • Meters that are inaccessible will be relocated to new spots which are readable to TNB meter readers
  • Relocating meters (e.g. to another wall within the compound of the premises) gives the users privacy and allows meter readings to be conducted if the users are not at home. This can also avoid TNB from issuing prolonged bill estimates as a result of inaccessible meters

How much will this cost?

Meter replacement and installation is FREE with all expenses fully borne by TNB. This includes the cost of relocating meters (within the compound of the premises) if necessary.

Make sure your meter is not modified

meter tamperingWe would like to advise our customers not to make any modifications to their electricity meters. Only authorised TNB technical support teams are allowed to handle TNB equipment.

Do not tamper with your meter

If there are any irregularities or signs of meter tampering, legal actions can be taken as provided under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

Actual consumptions recorded by your new meter

Any drop or increase in your electricity bill after the new meter has been installed is due to the accuracy of the new electronic meter. The new electronic meter records actual consumptions of electricity without under or over charging. The accuracy of the new electronic meter is verified by laboratories that are MS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited.

TNB is currently enforcing the Power Factor Surcharge in addition to the current usage charges for customers that require three-phase low voltage electricity. The customers are from commercial, industrial, mining and agriculture categories.
This surcharge does not affect domestic customers.

What is Power Factor?

Power Factor is an index used to measure the efficient use of electricity. This index is measured on a range of 0 to 1.

A high Power Factor index (e.g. above 0.85) indicates an efficient level of electricity usage. On the other hand, a low Power Factor index (e.g. under 0.85) shows an inefficient use of electricity, indicating electricity wastage.

Why you need to maintain a high Power Factor?

A high Power Factor index gives the following benefits:

  • No additional charges in monthly electricity bill as there is no Power Factor Surcharge
  • Extends the lifespan of electrical appliances
  • Reduces electricity wastage for electrical installations at customers' premises
  • Conserves the environment by lowering fuel usage and helps the country reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

Customers are encouraged to consistently maintain a high Power Factor index (above 0.85). A Power Factor Surcharge will be imposed on Power Factor index below 0.85.

Take these steps to improve Power Factor

capacitor bankPlease refer to the following steps to improve Power Factor:

  • Install equipment that can improve Power Factor, such as a Capacitor Bank
  • Avoid operating motor-based electrical appliances without load or below the load recommended by manufacturers
  • Use motor-based electrical appliances with a high Power Factor
  • Use motor-based electrical appliances that are SIRIM-certified and have energy efficient labels
