Anchoring Purpose: TNB's CSR Framework for Communities and Nation

In recent published stories, TNB’s contribution to Malaysian hockey was told as more than sponsorship. Through initiatives such as the TNB Thunderbolt Hockey Development Programme, leagues, tournaments and support for national teams, hockey reflects how sustained corporate commitment can nurture talent, strengthen communities and contribute to national pride.

This is one part of a larger purpose.

As Malaysia continues to advance its sustainable development agenda and commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the role of corporate citizenship is evolving. There is a growing recognition that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is most impactful when it is approached as a long-term investment in shared progress and aligned with the nation's priorities.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has, for decades, been part of daily life for Malaysians. Our refreshed Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Framework reflects our commitment to that role, guiding our CSR efforts with sharper strategic focus, and ensuring they remain impactful and inclusive in delivering outcomes that matter for society and the country.

TNB commitment to nation

A Framework Built on Purpose

The TNB CSR Framework is designed as a strategic compass for our community and nation-building efforts. It is anchored on a clear aspiration: to create sustainable, long-term value as a responsible corporate citizen, contributing to community development and nation building.

The framework is structured around two core areas - Community Investment and Nation Building, supported by five strategic pillars: Education, Economic and Social, Sports, Environment and the National Agenda. Together, these pillars channel our efforts towards initiatives that uplift communities today and strengthen Malaysia's future..

Importantly, the framework aligns our CSR with TNB’s broader strategy of RT2.0, the TNB Sustainability Framework and the national agenda, so that every programme we run is reinforcing its priorities.

Investing in Communities, Today and Tomorrow

Community Investment is where our CSR meets people in their daily lives. Across four strategic pillars, we focus on long-term, sustainable contributions that meaningfully improve community well-being.

Education

Education remains a cornerstone of our work. Through Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), we continue to nurture young talent who will contribute to Malaysia’s social and economic development including through YTN scholarships and convertible loans. Beyond that, we broaden access to quality learning through initiatives such as Ceria Ke Sekolah, STEM-related initiatives and other education-based interventions, supporting equitable opportunities from early schooling to higher education.

Economic and Social thumbnail

Economic and Social

Economic and Social initiatives address the most immediate needs of vulnerable communities. Programmes such as Projek Mesra Rakyat, Sumbangan Van Terpakai and Better Brighter Shelter promote social inclusion, while our humanitarian assistance, mobilised swiftly during floods, bringing relief when families need it most. Through targeted electrification efforts such as Village Street Lighting and solar installations at community halls, places of worship and welfare centres, we also expand access to reliable, affordable and sustainable power for underserved areas.

Sports

Sports has long been part of TNB’s identity. Our hockey development work spanning the TNB Thunderbolt Hockey Development Programme, the empowerment of leagues and tournaments, and support for the national team, strengthens the country’s hockey ecosystem from grassroots to elite level. Beyond hockey, we promote healthy lifestyles and youth empowerment through broader sports participation, including support for the SEA Games and golf development.

Environment

Environment initiatives reflect our role as a steward of the natural systems on which communities depend. Through biodiversity programmes such as firefly conservation, Kelah sanctuaries, river care management and coral planting, we work to conserve and restore ecosystems. My Brighter Green Initiative (MBGI) and broader sustainability practices contribute to climate change mitigation alongside our group-wide energy transition.

Building the Nation Alongside Our Communities

Beyond direct community investment, our CSR Framework recognises that TNB’s footprint carries a parallel responsibility: to support Malaysia’s long-term development priorities. This is the role of the Nation Building core area, anchored on the National Agenda pillar.

We empower youth through skills training, leadership development and pathways such as Digital Entrepreneurship for Giggers, Protégé placements and structured internships, nurturing future-ready individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society. Through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, we help build a skilled, innovative workforce that meets industry demand and drives economic growth.

In supporting the country’s energy transition, we participate in flagship platforms such as the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition Conference Malaysia (IGEM) and the International Sustainable Energy Summit (ISES), advancing inclusive pathways towards renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable practices.

Strong stakeholder relations underpin nation building. Through engagements tied to Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM), we work collaboratively with Government, regulators, industry peers and communities to drive shared, sustainable outcomes.

We also strengthen the social pillar of the nation. Programmes commemorating Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Perpaduan foster national unity, while our cultural preservation efforts, including support for Orang Asli communities and the celebration of Malaysia’s arts, traditional crafts and indigenous heritage, help safeguard the identity that makes Malaysia, Malaysia.

How We Deliver: Partnerships, Volunteerism and Discipline

A framework is only as strong as the way it is delivered. TNB’s CSR Framework is operationalised through a set of enablers of volunteerism, donations, sponsorships, partnerships and wakalah arrangements, where each chosen to suit the nature of the programme and the communities it serves.

Our employees remain at the heart of this delivery. TNB volunteers contribute their time and expertise to programmes nationwide, from refurbishing homes and schools to disaster relief and environmental restoration. Strategic partnerships with Government agencies, NGOs, academic institutions and community leaders extend our reach and ensure that initiatives are designed with, not for, the people they are meant to serve.

This delivery model is supported by governance that emphasises clarity of intent, measurable outcomes and responsible stewardship of resources, reflecting our broader commitment to ESG performance and transparent reporting.

A Renewed Commitment, A Continuing Effort

The TNB CSR Framework is a sharpening of focus, a clearer articulation of how we translate our scale, our presence and our resources into outcomes that genuinely matter for Malaysians.

As the country navigates an ambitious energy transition and a fast-changing social and economic landscape, TNB’s role as a responsible corporate citizen will only grow more important. Through this framework, we are committing not just to do more, but to do better with discipline, with partners, and with the communities and nation we are privileged to serve.
