Nestled in the heart of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) Bangsar, is an urban oasis that had the potential to become a sanctuary for both employees and nature. The Urban Park spans approximately 4 acres, including a stormwater lake which receives stormwater runoff from the surrounding buildings in TNB Bangsar, with excess water being discharged through a dam into the monsoon drain and ultimately into the Klang River.
The dream for the Urban Park began with a vision—to transform it into a peaceful and comfortable recreational area for TNB employees, while enhancing the walkability and connectivity between TNB’s buildings in Bangsar. It was part of a broader goal to align with the values of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), to create something that was not only beneficial for the present but would endure for generations to come.
This Urban Park’s lake is more than just a stormwater retention pond; it represents a shared resource, tranquility, and a source of life for both humans and aquatic wildlife. Serving as a natural water filtration system, it absorbs pollutants and reduces flood risks, making it a vital part of the local ecosystem. In addition, the park serves as a haven for local wildlife, a place where tall reeds sway in the breeze and birds nest among the mangroves. The wetland is teeming with diverse species - a vital habitat for fish, amphibians, and migratory birds, providing a vibrant ecosystem amidst high-rise buildings and busy streets.
A true blend of nature and urban life, the park is also a serene escape for employees and families, offering an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. It stands as a testament to the delicate balance between the natural world and the city, showcasing the shared commitment to protect and preserve this space for future generations.
Revitalizing Green Space
The Urban Park has undergone extensive restoration and conservation work to ensure that it continues to function as an important part of the environment and a meaningful space for the community. The upgrades were many, and each one was carefully planned with sustainability in mind. The existing walkways were given new life, allowing easier access for visitors while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the park.
Outdoor gym equipment was installed, inviting visitors to engage in healthy physical activity amidst nature. Additionally, we have introduced a versatile multipurpose court at Urban Park. This new facility includes three (3) dedicated pickleball courts and a permanent full-size basketball court, all set against a stunning city view.
The vibrant red Whatami flower sculptural lights were added to the park, casting a soft glow over the park, creating an atmosphere of serenity and beauty with the concept of ‘Shade in the Day, Light in the Night’. The Whatami Sculpture itself is a striking art installation that seamlessly integrates artistic and functional elements within public spaces. Drawing inspiration from nature, particularly flowers and organic forms, it is celebrated for its vibrant colors and striking, eye-catching design. The installation of the Urban Park logo, along with an iconic TNB logo sculpture symbolizing sustainability, was a visual reminder of the values that guided the project.
But perhaps one of the most significant changes was the planting of special aquatic plants—lotus and papyrus—which aids in water filtration while also enhancing the biodiversity of the lake. These plants weren’t just beautiful additions; they played a crucial role in maintaining the health of the ecosystem, ensuring the water remained clean and serves as a natural habitat for local fauna, including birds.

Fostering Stewardship on Environment
As the park took shape, it became a symbol of something larger —a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect the natural world. The transformation of the Urban Park was about more than just upgrading a space; it was about fostering a deeper connection with nature and inspiring those who visited to become stewards of the environment.
While large-scale efforts, like the park, are crucial, they are only part of the equation. It is the small, everyday actions that make a difference—reducing pollution, being mindful of water usage, and taking part in conservation programs. Every effort counts, and together, these small actions can lead to big changes. It is up to each one of us to help ensure the beauty and health of the park are preserved for the generations that will come after us.

An Achievement of Conservation
The Urban Park stands as a testament to what can be achieved when employees come together with a shared purpose. The park inspires us to continue the work of protecting and preserving the environment, ensuring that this space remains a symbol of our commitment to nature for generations to come. And so, the story of the Urban Park continues—an ongoing journey of care, collaboration, and commitment to a greener, healthier future for all.
