Capability building through learning and development

TNB's Learning and Development programmes are designed to empower our employees with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their roles and contribute to the company's overall success. The Learning & Development policy in place emphasizes on 3 principles of learning, namely formal, social and experiential learning.

The employees’ learning journey is purposefully designed to foster growth in their current roles. The Learning Journey programme follows the 70:20:10 Learning Principle, whereby 70% of their knowledge are from challenging experiences and assignments; 20% from developmental relationships; and 10% from formal training and coursework. This serves as a comprehensive guide to help employees plan their training and development, which includes both mandatory and non-mandatory training relevant to their roles.

The effectiveness of the employees’ learning journey is further monitored through annual assessment cycles to gauge their proficiency levels over time. Both the employees and management are given the platform to discuss and identify any further improvement areas, which are needed in supporting the Energy Transition agenda. Through this exercise, TNB aims to sustain its Organizational Competency Index (OCI) at above 80%.

Professional Certification Training

Ensuring the technical competency in our workforce is enhanced over time remains crucial to our day-to-day operations. TNB encourages its employees to pursue relevant professional certification in their respective fields and familiarise themselves with up-to-date industry standards and technical improvements as they further enhance their expertise required in pursuit of supporting our sustainability goals.

Empowering Our Partners: TNB's Training Modules for Vendors and Contractors

TNB recognises the importance of its partners, vendors, and contractors in contributing to its success. To ensure that these partners are empowered to the fullest, TNB has established a range of training modules designed to increase their competency and capabilities, aligning them with TNB's high standards of quality and performance.

The following are a few examples of training programmes conducted for vendors with over 3,500 having completed the training, as of September 2023:

Training Programs for Vendors Total No. of Vendors Completed Training
  • Horizontal Directional Drilling
  • Low Voltage Load Reading
  • Electrical Safety Program for Civil Works at Distribution Network Substations
  • Low Voltage Lifeline Work
  • High Voltage Overhead Line
  • Street Lighting System (Installation & Maintenance)

In addition, TNB has introduced structured competency development programmes for its vendors with the aim of enhancing their skillsets in order to achieve higher levels of excellence. In 2019 and 2020, TNB has sponsored 796 vendors/ contractors to complete training on Low Voltage Lifeline Work, Street Lighting System (Installation & Maintenance), High Voltage Overhead Line and Low Voltage Overhead Line.

To strengthen TNB’s contribution in capability building for its vendors as part of its corporate responsibility towards nation development during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, TNB has created a unique programme called TNB Reskilling Malaysia (TRM). Launched in 2020 and completed in 2023, the programme provided job matching and training for Malaysians, particularly those who were laid off or affected during the pandemic lockdown periods. Trained individuals, who completed the reskilling programme, were successfully recruited by TNB vendors without the need to incur any new hire development and onboarding costs.

Apart from securing new skilled employees, the vendors are certified and authorised to serve in the TNB ecosystem, especially in areas pertaining to Smart Meter installation and basic electrical system. To date, this 100% TNB-funded programme has created a big pool of vendors equipped with skilled employees. 2,084 individuals completed their certification with 96% of the participants are now certified as Smart Meter Installers for the national Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) Deployment Programme.

Other programmes related to TRM can be found in the table below.
