Stay Cool During The Current Hot Spell
26/05/2013
TNB would like to advise its customers to use their air-conditioners wisely during the current hot and dry spell for better management of their electricity consumption.
“Air conditioners represent a big portion of some of our customers’ electricity consumption. These customers may incur higher bills during the prolonged hot weather as they are tempted to stay indoors and switch on their air conditioners at the lowest temperature setting,” said TNB Senior General Manager (Customer Service), Ir. Kamaliah binti Abdul Kadir.
The following tips can help conserve energy and may avoid unnecessary high electricity consumption:
- Set the thermostat of the air-conditioning system between 23 to 25 degrees Celsius. Every 1 degree reduction can increase running costs by up to 10 per cent
- Change or clean your air conditioner’s filter regularly to maximize the unit’s cooling potential. Dirty filters restrict airflow and reduce efficiency
- Similarly, regular servicing of the air conditioner will ensure it always operate at optimal level
- Draw curtains and shades when the sun is beating in through the windows
- Shut all doors and windows and cover ventilation to ensure cool air does not escape the room
- At night, use thin blanket, switch on the fan and set the timer to turn off the air conditioner. Usually the room temperature will reach comfortable level after several hours. In addition, fans are cheap to run and improve the air circulation
Ir. Kamaliah also said that customers are recommended to replace air conditioners that are more than 10 years old as these appliances had lost its efficiency over time. For those looking for new air conditioners, below are some suggestions on to chose the right units:
- Go for the highest energy efficiency star rating possible. The more stars means greater efficiency of that particular appliances
- Choose the right air conditioners’ size and type that matches your requirement. An oversized air conditioner is not only costlier to purchase and install, it will also lead to higher electricity bill because the compressor needs to run and stop repeatedly. An undersized unit on the other hand, will not be able to cool the room properly and this is more apparent if the weather is hot
