TNB COMPLETES REHABILITATION OF TUANKU JA'AFAR POWER STATION

17/06/2009

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) held the completion ceremony for the Second Phase of the Tuanku Ja’afar Power Station Rehabilitation Project (PD2) yesterday, 16 June 2009. The First Phase was completed in 2005. The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Y.B. Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui. The Rehabilitation of the Tuanku Ja’afar Power Station involves the replacement of the previous inefficient and high gas-emitting conventional oil-fired plant with two new 750MW gas-fired combined cycle power plants with a very high efficiency of about 56 percent. These are the most efficient plants among the existing thermal power plants in Malaysia. They also have a reliability of above 90 percent. In addition, the plants are highly environmental friendly with a very low Nitrous Oxides (NOx) emission of less than 25 parts per million (ppm), below guidelines stipulated by the Department of Environment (DOE). The state-of-the-art plants have the capability to automatically switch from natural gas fire to distillate fire when natural gas supply is low, without any interruptions. The Rehabilitation Project has achieved a safety record of more than 12 million man-hours without Lost-Time-Injury (LTI). With a combined generation capacity of 1,500MW, PD1 & PD2 are expected to contribute 12 percent of total electricity demand in Peninsular Malaysia. TNB Chairman, Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Leo Moggie in his opening speech said, “The project has opened up many business opportunities, and local companies and communities have benefited tremendously from their participation in the implementation and construction of the project. These include in areas such as civil and foundation works, fabrication of steel structures for the powerhouse; erecting the power house and main plant equipments; fabrication of the Heat Recovery Steam Generator, cooling water pipes, water tanks and steam turbine condenser; and fabrication and supply of auxiliary equipments.” Present at the ceremony were the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, His Excellency Masahiko Horie, President/Chief Executive Officer of TNB, Dato’ Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh and Executive Officer/ General Manager (Power & Social Infrastructure Business Division) of Sumitomo Corporation, Mr. Kohei Hirao. Also present were Chief Representative of JICA Malaysia Office, Ms. Norika Suzuki, President of TEPSCO, Mr. Yoshifumi Nishiwaki, Senior Vice President (Operation and Technical) of TNB, Y. Bhg. Datuk Wira Ir. Md. Sidek Ahmad, Senior Vice President (Corporate Affairs) of TNB, Y. Bhg. Dato’ Abdul Razak Bin Abdul Majid and other top management of TNB.
