Manjung 4 adds 1,000 MW to National Grid

Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s new coal-fired power plant in Manjung, Perak began its commercial operations one minute after the stroke of midnight today, transmitting an additional 1,000 megawatt into the national grid.

The plant was commissioned merely five hours upon receiving the Commissioning Test Certificate from the Energy Commission at 7:00 PM on April 13.

The power supplied by the Manjung 4 plant raised the generating capacity of  TNB Janamanjung Sdn Bhd ( TNB’s wholly-owned subsidiary)  to 3,100 megawatt, turning it into peninsular Malaysia’s largest independent power producers todate.

“The plant has met all the required tests and is currently running within the expected operating parameters,” said TNB Janamanjung Managing Director, Shamsul Ahmad.

“The 1,000 megawatt of power generated, equivalent to the electricity needs of  2 million domestic users, will contribute towards further stability of the grid system and enhance reliability of supply,” he added.

Located within TNB Janamanjung’s 325 hectare site, Manjung 4 is Southeast Asia’s  most efficient power plant at present, employing super ultracritical combustion technology. It meets stringent environmental standards set by the World Bank and Malaysia’s Department of Environment.

TNB Janamanjung operates three other coal-fired power plants with a combined generating capacity of 2,100 megawatt.
