Brief Overview Of The Supply Disruption
14/01/2005
On Thursday, 13th January 2005, at 12.10pm, a report was made to National Load Despatch Centre that a 275kV circuit breaker at Kapar Power Station had to be taken out on an urgent basis for an emergency repair in order to prevent permanent damage to the breaker itself. Some 15 seconds after switching off this circuit breaker, another 275kV circuit breaker at Kapar tripped. This resulted in a major system disturbance that affected parts of Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. The southern connection with Singapore was also disconnected as a result of the disturbance. The total load lost for the affected areas was about 6400MW, affecting about 3 million customers. Restoration was initiated immediately. Supply was restored in stages from 1.30pm and the national transmission network was fully reconnected and normalised by 2.50pm. Supply to most customers was restored by 3.30pm with some isolated pockets of load which were still without supply. The last customer was reconnected by 6.10pm Note: This is just a preliminary report of the occurrence and further updates will be posted as and when available.
