Another TNB Commitment towards Renewable Energy
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) continues its commitment in the efforts to distribute environmentally friendly energy for the needs of the nation and the well-being of the people, by developing another Large-Scale Solar Project (LSS), this time in Bukit Selambau, Kedah.
The RM180 million project involves the installation of 134,880 solar photovoltaic panels on the 50 hectares site in Bukit Selambau to be developed by TNB Bukit Selambau Solar Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd (TRe).
It will not only be a landmark for the town of Bukit Selambau, but it is believed to positively change the socio-economics of the people nearby.
"This LSS project will benefit the surrounding people through job opportunities during the project’s development, besides through other activities that support the work at LSS," TNB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said in his welcoming speech at the LSS project's sod-turning ceremony.
According to Moggie, the LSS project is expected to be completed within 24 months with the targeted commercial operation date of 31 December 2020. It will be developed by the same forces experienced in developing Malaysia’s first major LSS, in Sepang. The groundbreaking ceremony of the LSS project was officiated yesterday by Menteri Besar of Kedah, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir.
"The State Government hopes that TNB will submit another bid to increase the capacity of this LSS project in Bukit Selambau, which I understand can achieve generation up to 100MW. We hope TNB will succeed in the bidding, " said Datuk Seri Muhriz. According to him, if TNB managed to increase the LSS project in Bukit Selambau up to 100MW, it will make Bukit Selambau a landmark as a solar town.
The 30 MWAC capacity LSS project is another TNB’s commitment to achieving its renewable energy (RE) capabilities of 1,700 MW by 2025, in line with government targets to achieve 20 percent of the country's energy resources from RE, in the same year.
