09/05/2010
May 7, 2010 - Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) of Thailand on a proposed 33kV System Interconnection for a reliable electricity from Pengkalan Hulu, Perak to Betong District, Thailand. The system will improve PEA’s existing system reliability to Betong District. Since the 115kV transmission line collapsed last year, power to the district is currently supplied via an alternate 70 km 33kV, which is deemed unreliable. The 33kV System Interconnection involves an overhead line from Baling to Pengkalan Hulu and a main substation in Pengkalan Hulu, targeted to be ready in August 2010. The proposed interconnection between TNB and PEA is scheduled for December 2010. TNB Chief Operating Officer/Executive Director, Ir. Hj. Azman Mohd said the 33kV line will be able to sustain electricity demand at Pengakalan Hulu, Perak and also Betong District, Thailand. “The Pengkalan Hulu distribution main substation will be sourced by Main Intake Substation Baling 132/33kV and has maximum capacity of 28 MVA. The completed project cost is in the region of RM8.5 million”, added Azman. Azman signed the MoU on behalf of TNB while PEA represented by the Deputy Governor (Regulated Retail Business Region 4), Mr. Chokchun Sukanthapruk. TNB Senior General Manager (Operations - Region 2), Distribution Division Haji Roslan Abdul Rahman and PEA’s Director of System Planning Department, Mr. Pongsak Harnboonyanon witnessed the signing ceremony.
